SIKHYA DEDICATES its Youth Entrepreneurship wing as the "Danforth Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence”
At a private ceremony on Monday 18th Sept 2006, Sikhya: The School of Learning dedicated its Youth Entrepreneurship wing as the “Danforth Centre for Entrepreneurial Excellence”.
This coincides with Washington University's main campus - often called the Hilltop campus also being renamed and dedicated as the Danforth Campus in honor of its former chancellor, Dr. William "Bill" Danforth, and his family and The Danforth Foundation for the role they have played in the evolution of Washington University
Apart from a 10 plus 2 academic course, Sikhya’s vision is to help young adults from the poorest of homes to become income-generators who can eventually pull up their entire family out of poverty. These youngsters in the age group of 16 to 25 yrs for social, economic or cultural reasons – do not make it through the school system or else come out of it lacking the skills required in the formal labour market. With the result they enter straight into low-wage exploitative work or start their own subsistence-level activities in the informal sector.
In the last one and a half years 97 youngsters have been trained in Retail and facility Management and Fashion designing. Of these 78 have already found placements with up market stores such as Reliance Fresh, Cyber cafes, boutiques etc. The remaining who were students doing part time courses have also begun to earn pocket money by doing casual / part time jobs from their homes. Like for the main School NO FEE is charged for this training.
